Last night, the Minnesota Wild traveled to the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville to face off with newly acquired draft pick Seth Jones and the Nashville Predators. However, the game would be cut short for Wild goaltender Niklas Backstrom.
Wild defenseman Keith Ballard bobbled with the puck, eventually turning it over to Predators left wing Eric Nystrom. Nystrom raced down the ice, just ahead of Ballard. When Ballard slashed Nystrom from behind, which cause the whistle to blow, Nystrom was brought to the ice and collided with Backstrom in the crease.
You can see from the replay, of which you can see here, you can see how Backstrom’s leg gets tied up under the full body weight of Nystrom, and smashed into the goal post.
After being attended to on the ice, he slowly made it off the ice, later with the assistance of two of his teammates, and was sent to the dressing room.
He was replaced in net by Wild goaltender Josh Harding.
Backstrom had not missed a game so far this season in net for Minnesota, so you can imagine not only the disappointment that he must feel, but the pressure that Harding is under to perform. Going in to a situation like this, especially one that involves a one-on-one confrontation like a penalty shot is not an easy feat for a cold goaltender.
There is no word yet on the extent of Backstrom’s injuries; however, we hope that it is nothing serious and he can return to the net soon.
