Projecting the BCS

Jan 8, 2013; Fort Lauderdale FL, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban poses with four of the national championship trophies after addressing the media during the winning coach press conference at Harbor Beach Marriott Resort

College football fans get to take a look at rankings weeks before the season even begins. Countless preview magazines create their own top 25 and the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches’ polls, which have always been two official polls that award national championships, are released as well.

However, nothing really matters until the BCS comes out. And that doesn’t happen until after the eighth week of college football.

That doesn’t mean BCS experts and pundits can’t take a crack at previewing what the poll might look like.

And that doesn’t mean those pundits have to agree.

For example, the popular website BCS Guru and ESPN expert Brad Edwards only agree on one thing – the Alabama Crimson Tide, who have won the last two titles and three of the last four, would be #1.

At # 2, BCS Guru pegs the Clemson Tigers, who have already defeated the Georgia Bulldogs, while Edwards has the Tigers fourth. He ranks the Stanford Cardinal and Oregon Ducks, second and third, respectively. BCS Guru places the Ducks third and the Cardinal fourth.

BCS Guru has the Florida State Seminoles checking in next, at five while Edwards has them sixth. They both have the Ohio State Buckeyes in the other position.
