Brazilian striker Thiago Silva takes on Matt Hamill tonight at UFC Fight Night 29. After his fantastic performance against Rafael ‘Feijao’ Cavalcante, many fans are clamoring to see the return of the Silva of old.
Unfortunately, Thiago missed weight at yesterday at 208 pounds. He was given two hours to shed the weight, but decided not to. He will forfeit 25% of his purse and will not be eligible to win any post fight bonuses.
This is yet another issue for Silva, who has simply had a dismal three year run of problems. After beating Brandon Vera at UFC 125 in 2011, Silva was suspended for providing a falsified urine sample for his post-fight drug test. His win over Vera was turned to a No Contest and he was suspended for a year. His return from his suspension saw him matched up against Alexander Gustafsson, where he was dominated for 3 rounds en route to losing a decision.
Thiago went on to fight Stanislav Nedkov, winning the fight by arm-triangle choke, but again failed his post-fight drug test and the fight was overturned to a No Contest. This time Silva was popped for marijuana, and unbelievably was not cut. At this point, Silva had not won a fight (due to the No Contests) for three years. His last win was over Keith Jardine at UFC 102 in 2009.
The UFC decided to give Silva another chance, and he rewarded them with a beautiful KO victory over Feijao. It seemed like Silva had put his rough past behind him and was ready to move forward until yesterday’s weight debacle.
Dana has made no qualms about his disgust for fighter’s missing weight, and Silva’s past likely will not help him. If Silva loses or puts on a lackluster performance tonight, expect him to get cut. Silva’s back is against the wall, but he has pulled through before. Can he do it again tonight?
