San Antonio Spurs waive forward Sam Young
By Brad Rowland
The Spurs roster is down to a brisk 19 players.
In the 3-word Tweet above (accompanied by a press release), the team announced that they were parting ways with former Grizzlies and Pacers forward Sam Young. Young was only a member of the organization for a small period of time (he signed on September 30th), and most felt as if this move was inevitable.
Young was a former fan favorite (of epic proportions) in Memphis before joining Indiana for 56 games last season. In 249 career games, Young has averaged less than 6 points per contest, and while he is an exceptional defensive player at times, his below-average (to be kind) offensive arsenal is certainly a drawback in terms of his future prospects.
At 28 years old (he was a very old rookie by today’s NBA standards), the end could potentially be nearing for Young as an NBA regular. He will need to find a roster that is in dire need of defensive help, and a team/coach willing to overlook his shooting woes (career 44% from the field and 28% from 3-point range) in favor of the skills that he does possess.
For the Spurs, they have (at least) four additional cuts to make, and this is just the beginning.
