Tim Thomas injury not considered serious

Tim Thomas left during the first period of the Florida Panthers’ October 8 contest against the Philadelphia Flyers after injuring his groin.

The Panthers can hardly afford to lose Thomas at this juncture. While he hasn’t exactly been a world-beater in Florida, Jacob Markstrom has yet to prove that he can be even a competent NHL starter, let alone a good one. The team may have received good news though, as per George Richards of the Miami Herald:

Richards went on to update everyone on the situation though, and it’s pretty easy to read between the lines here.

This puts the Panthers in quite the predicament. While no one expected the team to finish in a playoff spot, there was some hope that they’d be able to at least marginally improve. Aleksander Barkov gives Florida hope for the future, and last year’s Calder Trophy winner Jonathan Huberdeau is one of the most outstanding young players in the NHL.

Without a solid backstop though, it’s going to be another long season in Florida that will likely result in another lottery selection at the draft.
