All eight players that made the men’s quarterfinals of the Shanghai definitely deserved to be there; they all played really well throughout the tournament.
But now four of those eight have been eliminated from the tournament.
Top seeded Novak Djokovic beat Gael Monfils, who took out Roger Federer in the previous round. Djokovic won in three sets, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-4.
He will move on to the semifinals to play (7) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who beat Florian Meyer in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
On the other side of the draw, we saw (2) Rafael Nadal in action against (8) Stanislas Wawrinka. They played a tough first set, but it seemed to take all of the energy out of Wawrinka. Nadal won the match in straight sets, 7-6(10), 6-1.
Rafa will play (6) Juan Martin Del Potro, who beat (15) Nicholas Almagro in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Del Potro is playing his first game since the second round of the tournament, because of his third round opponent, Tommy Haas withdrawing due to an injury.
Based on the match ups, it’s going to be an interesting round, that’s for sure. Based on how well they’ve performed over the past few months, as well in this individual tournament, I am going to give the edge to Djokovic and Nadal. I think we’ll be seeing a (1) vs. (2) finals match when it’s all said and done.
