Receiver Eric Ward praises Texas Tech QB Davis Webb for clutch performance

Filling in for the injured Baker Mayfield, Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Davis Webb made the most of this first career start. Webb, a freshman, threw for 415 yards and three touchdowns while leading the Red Raiders to a 42-35 win over the Iowa State Cyclones.

Although he wasn’t surprised by Webb’s stellar play, senior wide receiver Eric Ward, who caught seven passes for 61 yards in the game, praised the young quarterback afterwards:

You’ve got to understand the situation: Davis is a strong kid, and he’s strong-minded as well. To come in and perform like that, under pressure, after Mayfield going down, that’s a big step for him. Hat’s off to him.

I knew he had it in him. When he first stepped on campus, I made sure we got work in. I worked with all the quarterbacks, because they’re all talented, and I made sure I got work in with him as well. During the summer, we stayed out there after workouts and got on the same page (RedRaiders.com).

Finalizing the starting quarterback job may prove tough for head coach Kliff Kingsbury. Mayfield was putting together a great freshman campaign before tweaking his knee, and sophomore Michael Brewer is about to return to the team after being sidelined for multiple months by a back injury.
