If Mexico wants any chance of clinching a trip to the World Cup today they need a win and some help. A win can only help them if Jamaica beats Honduras, who sits three points ahead of Mexico in the table. If Mexico can’t pass Honduras, all is not lost. They’ll get a chance to go to Brazil in a play-off with New Zealand, but an automatic berth would be nice.
Mexico has found support in an unlikely support, from their rivals the United States.
“It’s tough. I don’t think it is in anyone’s best interests that Mexico is in this spot,” USMNT forward Herculez Gomez told ESPN Deportes. “As a player you want to be able to say that you play in the toughest league in the CONCACAF region and on one of the strongest national teams as well.”
“If Mexico doesn’t make it (to the World Cup) it will be a failure and all of us at the club level will suffer,” Gomez said. “The big losers here would be the clubs.”
