Mexico controlled their own destiny on Tuesday night in World Cup qualifying. All they needed was a tie or a win over Costa Rica to clinch fourth place in CONCACAF and advance to a play-off game with New Zealand with a World Cup berth on the line, but El Tri came out uninspired and didn’t do their job.
Mexico lost, 2-1, to Costa Rica, but they were bailed out by their neighbors up north when the United States’ come from behind win in stoppage time saved the Mexican squad from being eliminated.
After Graham Zusi was able to net the tying goal for the USMNT, Spanish announcers calling the Mexico game lost their minds as the goal was El Tri’s saving grace.
The announcers let out a “We love you forever and ever” and a “God bless America” after the goal, which capped off one of the wildest two minutes of soccer in recent memory.
