The latest shocker regarding Lance Armstrong involves singer/girlfriend Sheryl Crow witnessing the dope’s doping habits. However, sordid details that paint Armstrong in an entirely different picture are beginning to emerge. Reed Albergotti and Vanessa O’Connell of the Wall Street Journal uncovered a bevy more shocking details, among them:
Armstrong’s first wife, Kristin Richards, signed a nondisclosure agreement as part of a $15 million divorce settlement. Richards is thought to have participated in Armstrong’s purchasing and disposing of performance enhancing drugs.
Armstrong was also said to hang out with strippers, podium girls, female fans and cycling groupies and had a reputation as a womanizer even while he was married. Armstrong’s teammates nicknamed him “FedEx” because his woman “absolutely, positively has to be there overnight.”
Armstrong’s made “donations” to the very organization that was supposed to be policing him: Union Cycliste Internationale. According to the report, cyclist Greg LeMond’s wife, Kathy, testified that in 1999 an Armstrong sponsor paid the organization to cover up a positive test. Armstrong then tested positive for the banned substance EPO two years later, but again donated to UCI .
More than likely, more and more sordid details will emerge about Armstrong. Perhaps the real story will only be told by Armstrong himself, and only after spending 15-20 years in prison riding for the French prison sponsor, Team Chateau d’if.
