Put another official “hat in the ring” with regard to the Chicago Cubs suddenly lengthy managerial search.

The above report from MLB.com’s Carrie Muskat actually confirms earlier rumors that Martinez would interview, but it is yet another option for the Cubs. Previously, the Cubs have brought in former managers A.J. Hinch and Manny Acta for a look at the job, but Martinez could be a “flashier” candidate for Tampa Bay.

The 49-year-old Martinez actually made his Major League debut with the Cubs back in 1986, and he would be a legacy-type hire for the organization. It’s obviously too early to speculate on what kind of manager he would be (Martinez has never managed at any level), but his qualifications have put him in a positive enough light where the likes of Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer are showing interest.

With multiple candidates already under the watch of the Cubs front office, this process could have a long way to go. There doesn’t appear to be any level of real “urgency” for Chicago, and honestly, I’m not sure there needs to be with no “high-profile” names on the market. Stay tuned as the situation progresses.
