Dating back to his playing days, many thought Matt Williams would eventually find his way into a Major League managerial job given his leadership ability.

That may be sooner than later according to one source, who told ESPN’s Buster Olney that he would be ‘shocked’ if Williams doesn’t end up with the Washington Nationals job.

Per Olney:

Just one opinion: An evaluator with knowledge of the Nationals’ managerial search says he’d be shocked if Matt Williams doesn’t get the job.

Along with Williams, current Nationals bench coach Randy Knorr have been viewed as the outside favorites, this after Joe Girardi returned to the New York Yankees.

Current Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo worked with the Diamondbacks when Williams was a player with the team, so their already established relationship could play a role into a potential hiring.

In addition to Williams and Knorr, former MLB catcher Brad Ausmus has rumored to be a candidate for the job, though, he currently appears to be behind both Williams and Knorr in regards to the Nationals wishlist.
