Richard Pitino must have some of his father’s good luck rubbing off on him. The NCAA — who does not have the ability to stay consistent — has ruled that Drake transfer, Joey King, will be eligible to play right away for the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
King is a six-foot-nine, power forward. In less than 20 minutes per game, King averaged 6.9 points and 2.9 rebounds as a freshman. He was also named a member of the Missouri Valley all-freshman team.
For Pitino, this is more than good news. King is going to add some much needed depth to the frontcourt. The Golden Gophers lost Trevor Mbakwe and Rodney Williams at the end of last season as well not gaining Rakeem Buckles — who was not granted the same waiver which King has.
I am not sure if King is going to see a ton of minutes on the court. However, at the very least, he is going to be needed to help keep some balance going with the minutes being spread across the frontcourt. Unfortunately for the Gophers, Elliott Eliason and Maurice Walker are the top two big men returning, only combining to average just over four points and five boards a game.
Pitino, as well as Minnesotta, is going to have to figure something out with their frontcourt. Somehow, though, I think all involved will be just fine. I mean, there is a Pitino involved after all.
