The UFC 166 pay-per view card kicked off with a flyweight match up between John Dodson and Darrell Montague as we looked to get the action rolling. Dodson is one of the quickest and most athletic fighters in the sport, so it was going to be exciting to see how he could use his speed and power to bring the attack to Montague.
As we always see from the flyweights, there was plenty of speed early, but the wild shots led directly to a low blow. Luckily, Dodson was able to shake it off and there was no delay in the action.
Montague was doubling up his jab and looking to take advantage of his reach advantage, but Dodson was able to sneak inside after baiting Montague with his left to sneak in a stiff right hand. Montague stayed composed, but it was a quality shot that would do some damage for later in the fight.
Dodson was able to land another huge shot that left Montague hanging on for dear life, and Dodson turned on the pressure with a flurry of heavy punches. Somehow Montague was able to get back to his feet, even though he looked to be in another world, but there was no question about the quality of his chin.
After exchanging a few more shots, Dodson showed off his power with a devastating left directly to the chin of Montague that sent him face first to the mat.
The official time of the stoppage came at 4:13 of the first round.
