Bill Russell issues statement in regards to his airport incident

Bill Russell was arrested back on Friday for bringing a gun to the security checkpoint of a Seattle airport. The gun was licensed, and Russell was released. Well, now he has issued a statement, per the Boston Globe:

“Before boarding my flight from Seattle to Boston, I had accidentally left a legal firearm in my bag. I apologize and truly regret the mistake,” he said. “I was issued a citation by the TSA, whose agents couldn’t have been more thorough and professional when dealing with this. I really appreciate their efforts to keep air travel safe.”

Russell could have very well forgot that he had the gun on him, or he could be ignorant to the new TSA safety rules. Either way, I highly doubt that he was intending on doing any harm to the people on the flight, and I assume this was just a simple mistake. Russell is one of the NBA’s greatest players, and he even has the Finals MVP trophy named after him. It is highly unlikely that anyone will reach his record of 11 championships as a player.
