While we were pretty much assured that Adam Wainwright would be announced as the Game 1 starter of the 2013 World Series for the St. Louis Cardinals, we weren’t as sure in regards to the Boston Red Sox.
The Cardinals, who finished their NLCS with the Dodgers a day earlier were able to set their rotation however they liked, though thanks to the four day break, the Red Sox were awarded a similar scenario.
So who’s taking the mound for the Red Sox in Game 1? None other than ace Jon Lester, who will oppose Wainwright and the Cardinals on Wednesday evening.
It’s official: Jon Lester will start Game 1 of the World Series.
Lester, unlike Wainwright, does have a career start against his opponents though Lester’s start came in 2008 and really holds no weight against a completely different Cardinals team.
Some speculation had John Lackey taking the mound in Game 1, though, Lester seems to be the better choice, especially given the Cardinals struggles against left handed pitching this season where they ranked near the bottom of the league.
