‘Gravity’ soars for the third week in a row at the Box Office

Director Alfonso Cuarón’s interstellar space epic holds on to the top spot at the Box Office this weekend for the third week in a row.

The film starring Academy Award Winner Sandra Bullock as Dr. Ryan Stone, a medical engineer on her first space shuttle mission, who must find a way to come to terms with the loss of her daughter all while facing down the all-too-real possibility of being trapped in space forever; or at least until her oxygen wears out.

The film also stars George Clooney who plays veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski, who is commanding his final expedition.

Gravity came out swinging again with another $31 million this weekend bringing its domestic gross to about $171 million.

Captain Phillips was able to hold on to the number 2 spot for the second week in a row pulling in another $17.3 million for a domestic gross of $53.3 million. The piracy drama surrounding the real life events of Captain Richard Phillips as he was taken prisoner by Somali pirates in 2009 when they hijacked his ship, the MV Maersk Alabama. Academy Award winner Tom Hanks plays the title role.

Just behind that is horror sensation Carrie the reimagining of the 1976 classic. The film stars Kick-Ass actress Chloë Grace Moretz in the role of Carrie White, a shy, young girl who realizes she possesses powers and unleashes terror on her school mates when she is pushed too far at the senior prom.

Carrie brought in $17 million this weekend; however, it is expected to draw bigger numbers next week, as well as other recent horror films like Insidious: Chapter 2, as we head towards Halloween.

Also debuting this week is Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarznegger action thriller Escape Plan which brought in around $9.8 million this weekend, earning it the number 5 slot.

Debuting to really low numbers this weekend is the Bill Condon directed drama The Fifth Estate starring Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange, the creator of the controversial website WikiLeaks. The film only managed to pull $1.71 million in its opening weekend, earning it the number 8 slot.
