As well as quarterback Sean Mannion and wide receiver Brandin Cooks played in Oregon State’s 49-17 thrashing of the Cal Golden Bears on Saturday, it was the OSU defense that jumped off the film for head coach Mike Riley. Speaking with reporters during his weekly press conference, Riley said his defense did a great job shutting own Cal’s “Bear Raid” offense:
I thought our kids played really hard, and had lots of positives defensively. I thought we handled their tempo really well, we (forced) four turnovers. We knew they were a passing team and we wanted to make sure we didn’t let them be a run team and a pass team, and I thought we did a nice job of taking the run away. Just in general, we ran to the ball and hustled like crazy, got a good push to the quarterback and held them to a low offense total for them, just 366 yards.
Offensive we had some big plays … but we left some points out there, and had too many missed assignments and procedure penalties that cost us (Oregon Live).
The Beavers will take on the No. 8 Stanford Cardinal this upcoming Saturday. The game will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. PT and can be seen on ESPN.
