Jonathan Ericsson will miss two-to-three weeks with a shoulder injury according to the Detroit Red Wings. It’s a good thing that the super-young defense looked solid against the San Jose Sharks then, considering the Wings were without their top defensive pair in Ericsson and Niklas Kronwall.
While Detroit could get Kronwall back this week, the team announced today that Ericsson could miss upwards of three weeks.

Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press wrote that “Holland said Ericsson got hurt in Phoenix on Saturday…Ericsson waited until Monday afternoon to have an MRI exam in order to attend the birth of his baby girl.”
Ericsson’s absence could leave the door open for Xavier Ouellet to stick around for a little bit longer than expected. He was strong as the Wings played the Sharks to a 0-0 tied through regulation in his NHL debut, and didn’t seem out of place against one of the top offenses in the league.
While Detroit will miss Ericsson on the penalty kill, the organization has always taken pride in the way players step up their games when minute-munching guys hit the IR for a few weeks. Brendan Smith is another player worth keeping an eye on, as he has been hit-or-miss for the Wings so far through the first few weeks of the regular season.
