There are few players in the country playing as flawlessly as Oregon Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota has in 2013. Mariota stats are eye-popping — 2,051 passing yards, 19 passing touchdowns, 493 rushing yards, 9 rushing touchdowns — and especially impressive when you consider he hardly ever plays in fourth quarters.
Still, Mariota is upset with himself for fumbling the ball twice against the Washington State Cougars last weekend. Not only were the fumbles Mariota’s first two turnovers of the season, but one of them was returned for a touchdown. The Oregon QB told reporters on Monday that he’s focused on improving his oh-so-disastrous ball security:
Obviously I have to take care of the ball better. I was pretty nonchalant with it in the pocket and we can’t have that. Lucky for us, we were fortunate to come out with a win with that, but a couple of these next games, we can’t have that.
The ball is our friend. We can’t have it out there like that. I have to continue to take care of it. I just have to learn from it and get better. I put the team in a bad spot with that (Oregon Live).
Mariota and his disgraceful butterfingers will lead the Ducks against the UCLA Bruins this weekend.
