Tonight is going to be an interesting night. Not only does the S.H.I.E.L.D. team have to find a way to contain a new potential threat, but they have to ward one off from the inside. Let’s take a closer look at tonight’s episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. entitled ‘Girl in the Flower Dress’.
The Fire Wielder
We start off tonight in Hong Kong, China where a young magician is performing for a small crowd on the street. He seems to be wielding fire in his bare hands. Except this time, unlike other magicians, this is no trick.
After his show is over, he is approached by a pretty, young woman in a flower dress. She asks him how he was able to do such a thing; however, as is the magician’s code, he tells her that he cannot reveal his secrets. She asks to see the trick again. He resists at first, but then he ends up bringing her back to his home.
They engage in small talk and get to know each other a little better over a beer. If only he knew that he would be the only one revealing secrets tonight.
She presses him once again to show her his special trick. He puts up some mild resistance before he creates a small flame from the palm of his hand. She asks him if it hurts; he tells her that it doesn’t even hurt a little. She seems amazed by the feat; however, the amazement was only a rouse.
She tells him that she believes that he has been chosen. She tells him to close his eyes. This poor guy probably thinks he is about to get lucky, but lucky is the absolute last thing on the menu tonight. When he reopens them, two men in silver suits attack him. He stabs one of them with a knife off of the table, but he is knocked out.
You Sunk My Battleship!
Back on the plane, Agent Ward and Skye are engaging in a riveting game of Battleship. Ward tells her that it is a part of her training, as it is an SO’s duty to evaluate their students. Well…and he likes board games.
He tells her that for a former Rising Tide Hacker, she is picking things up with S.H.I.E.L.D. pretty quickly. Just then, she pulls out the old G4. What came next? You sank my Battleship. Ward decides they need to go for the best 2 out of 3.
Agents Coulson and May are observing in the background. He believes that she is starting to fit in nicely with the team.
We now know that Mr. Hot Hands is named Chan Ho Yin. Coulson tells the team that he was a normal, run-of-the-mill street performer until a few years prior when he began to exhibit moderate pyro-kinetic abilities.
He came to S.H.I.E.L.D.’s attention when he was seen lighting torches in the street with his pinky. They told him to keep his abilities under wraps, but then again…when does anyone ever listen?
Coulson says that he has been in the “index” ever since. The index is a short list of people with powers.
He says that Chan was assigned a field agent who checked in on him every couple of days, and this is how they realized that he had gone missing. The team checks in with Agent Kwan via satellite.
Kwan tells them that whoever took him left behind a scrap for fireproof clothing. Obviously, whoever took Chan were professionals and knew what they were looking for.
Kwan tells them that their system was recently compromised. He mentions that it was the same cyber punks who hacked them previously. Could this be someone affiliated with The Rising Tide? Of course it is.
All of a sudden, the entire room goes quiet, and all eyes are trained on Skye.
The Traitor Among Them
Back in Coulson’s office, Agents Coulson and Ward are questioning Skye about the intrusion. She explains to them that the Rising Tide is a huge organization of hacktivists from all over the world, and that any one of them could have done it. She assures them that it wasn’t her.
I mean…how could she? She has been living with the S.H.I.E.L.D. team since their very first mission.
In roder to prove her innocence, she asks to be allowed to trace the hack and help find who it is. Ward stands up for her and gives her his vote of confidence. Wow…Ward has been very trusting of her lately.
Coulson tells her to do it quickly. The longer he is missing, the more danger he is in.
The Girl in the Flower Dress
We now see the mysterious girl in the flower dress in a bedroom with Chan. He panics as he wakes, not knowing where he is.
She apologizes for what happened last night. She tells him that she had to bring him in under the radar. He automatically assumes that she is with S.H.I.E.L.D. He tells her to tell Agent Kwan that he does not need to be read the power protocols again. I think S.H.I.E.L.D. is the least of his problems right now.
She says that she doesn’t work for S.H.I.E.L.D., and that she comes to him as a friend. She sure has a funny definition of friendship.
She tells him that she can help him to increase his power. Thankfully, he realizes that nothing in this world is truly free. He asks her what the catch is. She tells him that she would like to run some tests on him. See…always a catch.
She tells him that if he walks out the door, everyone will forget his name. He asks if she intends to make Chan Ho Yin a famous name. She tells him that she plans to give him a new name…like Scorch.
She asks him if he has ever heard of Steve Rogers. No? However, everyone knows who Captain America is.
Chan tells her that he doesn’t want to be a superhero. He says that he was given this power for a reason, and that he just wants people to see what he can do. She assures him that they will. She says she wants him to be seen as what he was meant to be; a star.
People seem to underestimate the power of a pretty girl. Chan is actually starting to fall for this.
Back on the plane, Skye is working vigorously to figure out who it was that hacked into the S.H.I.E.L.D. system. Coulson comes in and wants to know how close they are to locating the source.
She determines that the origin of the breach was in Austin, Texas. The hacker’s name is Miles. Apparently, everyone seems to already know who he is. According to Fitzsimmons, this guy was able to hack into the Kremlin.
Well, that can’t be good.
The team sets a course for Austin to head the off at the source.
On The Hunt
On the ground in Austin, Skye and Ward are searching for Miles. Ward is the first to lay eyes on him. Unfortunately, he knows he’s been spotted. As one would expect, he takes off running. Ward gives chase.
He jumps in his car and takes off. Coulson, who is already in his own vehicle, pursues him on the road.
After narrowly missing quite a few accidents, Miles engages what he calls Gridlock Protocol. After hitting just a few buttons on his phone, the street lights begin to change, and traffic begins to bunch up. Smooth move, Mr. Hacktivist; well played.
We come to find out that Miles was rushing off the meet Skye. After locking multiple locks on his door, Skye asks him if he is sure that he wasn’t followed.
She asks him who he leaked the files to. He seems confused.
He tells her that he released them into the world where they belong. She tells him that they will not stop hunting him until they find someone else to blame. She can’t believe that he would hack S.H.I.E.L.D. while she is on the inside. She tells him that he could have ruined everything for her.
Then, the real bombshell happens. Apparently, Skye and Miles are (or at least were) romantically involved. However, one could assume from the amount of kissing they are doing, it is still pretty present tense.
After their little romp in the sack, she tells him that she has been digging, but that his little stunt is going to make things more difficult for her.
She tells him that if her team suspects something that she is screwed. She tells him that there is a guy in trouble because of him, and that she needs to get back.
While she is getting dressed, he asks her about what she has been doing at S.H.I.E.L.D. and asks her what it is like on the inside. She tells him that she has good people working with her.
When she opens the door to the other room in an attempt to locate her shirt, she finds Agent May on the other side with her shirt in her hand. Well…that escalated quickly.
The team is most certainly not amused with this latest development.
She tries to explain herself to Coulson, but gets the one finger. He asks how long the two of them had been in contact. She tells him once the day she joined and then earlier today.
She explains to Coulson that the two of them have been together for a very long time and that they look after each other. She said that she didn’t contact him because they were working together, but because they are friends.
Coulson asks her who he is working with. She tells him that he works alone, and that he is an idealist who believes in freedom of information. Coulson says that information cost someone their freedom and that she sabotaged their efforts to remedy that. She swears that she came to find out what Miles knew about Chan.
She tells Coulson that Miles is a dead end, and that he knows nothing.
May is questioning Miles about who he gave the information to and what happened to Chan. It seems like he really may not know anything.
Coulson tells the team to gather all the evidence and secure the prisoners. They have everything they need there, and are heading to Hong Kong.
She tries to explain herself to Ward, but he really isn’t interested in hearing it. He handcuffs her just like Miles, and they head back to HQ.
The girl in the flower dress is showing Chan around a large laboratory. She tells him that they are there to give him anything he needs while they observe his powers.
She starts to describe the serum that they have developed. She tells him that the results thus far have been impressive, and that it would strengthen his powers. That is, until it wears off.
She tells him that she is excited to see what happens with him.
They inject him with the serum, and he can immediately start to feel the effects. What was once a small flame is now a blazing ball of fire in his hands.
He is starting to feel really energized. I think he likes this just a little too much. She tells him that his power is an amazing gift.
He says that from now on, nobody is going to hold him back. Yep…he likes it a little too much.
Back on the plane, Skye and Miles are contained in an interrogation room. He is going on about being denied his basic rights.
She tells him that this isn’t about them, and that the team is trying to save someone’s life.
This sparks an argument between the two.
Fitzsimmons is looking into Miles, but they can’t seem to find anything out of the ordinary. Ward tells them to keep looking.
Back in his office, Agents Coulson and May are discussing the recent events. He pretty much gives May the open door for the “I told you so” moment.
Coulson is having hard time dealing with the fact that he trusted her and that May turned out to be right. She asks him what his gut was telling him right now. He believes that Skye is still hiding something.
Ward walks into the interrogation room. He tells Miles that Skye has been defending him and telling S.H.I.E.L.D. that he is a standup guy. Apparently Miles wasn’t so stand up after all.
Ward reveals that in the days following the hack, Miles made a number of deposits all totaling about 1 million dollars. Skye asks him if he sold information. He admits that he has. She is so furious with him. I think if she could have gotten out of her handcuffs, she may just have choked him.
He tells her that the money could have changed his life, and that the woman he gave the information to was harmless. Skye points out the obvious; no one who pays that much money for information is harmless.
It would seem that the girl in the flower dress gave him the same speech that she gave Chan. She told him that he had a gift and that people like him deserved more.
Miles said that he traced the account back to make sure that the money wasn’t coming from some evil corporation, but that it was just a simple eco research lab. Some study involving centipedes. Uh oh…here we go again.
The Lab Rat
They are now testing the effect of the serum on Chan. The girl in the flower dress seems to think that they have neutralized the volatility in the serum.
The doctor tells her that she is surprised she got him to cooperate. She replied that he has dreams and she told him that they would come true.
We now know that the girl in the flower dress is named Raina.
She incapacitates Chan.
Coulson informs the team that they are dealing with Centipede. They are trying to figure out who is really behind the effort.
They also discuss what Centipede could want with Chan. Simmons has determined what they actually want. She determined that they are going to use his blood to stabilize the extremis drug.
Coulson said that if Chan is indeed Centipede’s little lab rat, that they need to get there before the experiment is over.
Back in Centipede’s lab, Chan in incapacitated and tied down to a table.
He tries to stop them from proceeding; however, this time when he tries to use his flame, his hands and arms begin to blister and bleed.
They tell him that the reason he never burned in the past is because his blood platelets are flame resistant. However, now they would be removing them.
Raina, I thought you said that I had a gift” Chan says. “And you’re giving it.” She replies.
Back on the ground, Coulson is organizing the operation. He updates Kwan on the plan. Coulson warns him to be careful and that the extremis drug is highly explosive.
Inside, they have confirmed Chan’s location. They blow the door and fight their way past the guards.
They find Chan still strapped to the table. Suddenly, all of the doors begin to close and lock.
Coulson turns to Chan to give him an order when he realizes that he has a blazing hole through his center. What has Chan done? Chan says that he has set himself free.
Knowing that the team has ran into trouble, Ward comes and releases Skye in the hopes that’s he can help him. Skye said that she has a way to override the system, but that she needed to be onsite.
Back at the lab, Coulson and May are trying to negotiate with Chan, but he truly feels that he was being kept prisoner by S.H.I.E.L.D. and that he wants to set himself free. He continues his onslaught against May and Coulson; however, he seems to be doing just as much harm to himself. Almost his entire arms are blistered and bloody.
Even Coulson’s weapon was no match for Chan’s firewall.
In another area of the lab we see Debbie (the doctor from the first episode) and Raina walking down a corridor. Debbie is telling whoever she has on the phone that S.H.I.E.L.D. has infiltrated the building. Raina seems to think that Debbie is bad luck.
Once inside, Agent Ward and Skye get to work on the security system.
Now that Coulson has used the last of the tranquilizer, they realize that Chan has exhausted his last chance. Now, their only mission is to contain the damage.
Chan has found his way to Debbie and Raina. When Chan starts to advance, Raina hits the button on the elevator leaving Debbie out to dry.
I wish you the best.” Raina says as the door closes.
Despite her pleas, he still lights her up.Well…would you prefer original recipe or extra crispy? Unfortunately, she is a little charred.
Coulson and May come around the corner. They tell Chan that they don’t want to hurt him, but they have to. May stabs him with two rather large needles, incapacitating him.
Given the opportunity, Coulson and May take off running. Chan is about to combust.
Miles is back on the bus working on a way to direct the blast out of the building,
Just as the team makes it out of the building a huge ball of fire blasts out of the roof. I guess Miles did it.
Ward tells Coulson that Skye extracted some information from their computer that may give them a lead on Centipede.
You can’t save someone from themselves, sir.” Ward tells Coulson. “You can if you get to them early enough.” Coulson replies.
I think Skye gets the point pretty clearly.
The Wrap Up
You’ve got two choices. You take what’s in this box, or we put you in a slightly bigger one.” Coulson says as he hands a small box to Miles.
The box contains a bracelet that does pretty much whatever S.H.I.E.L.D. wants it to. Coulson tells him that he is going to have issues using electronic devices for a while.
Coulson then tells him that he is free to go. Miles reminds him that they are still in Hong Kong. Coulson gives him the obligatory…and?
Coulson also tells him that Kwan’s family thanks him for the anonymous donation. There goes Miles’ backup plan.
He tells Skye to come to his office.
She tells Miles that if they allow her to, she plans to stay with S.H.I.E.L.D. He tells her that she has changed. She tells him that he is not who she thought he was. I guess this is the fork in the road for the two of them, and both of them have to go their own way.
Skye knocks on Coulson’s door.
She opens her mouth to speak, but before she can get the words out he tells her to stop lying.
He tells her that she has one chance to tell him her deep dark secret, and if she doesn’t then he is done with her.
She hands him a drive that has all the information she has on herself. It turns out that her secret wasn’t so big and bad afterall. The reason she learned to crack systems, the reason she is the way she has become is because she is trying to find her parents.
She says that there is absolutely no record of them. Everything in her life leads back to one document; redacted.
She thinks it has to do with S.H.I.E.L.D.
Coulson tells her that he may be able to help her, but she may not like what she finds.
Before leaving, he hands her the same bracelet that he gave to Miles. As he walks out, she puts the bracelet on her arm.
We see Raina pay a visit to a man in prison. She tells him that the Doctor is dead, but they have found a solution to their little combustion problem. She asks him to reach out to the clairvoyant to see if any insights can be given regarding Stage 3.
It looks as if they are going to permit Skye to stay; however, trust is a very difficult thing to gain, definitely in their field of work. I am not sure that they will ever trust her again, if they even truly did in the first place.
The plot involving Centipede seems to thicken every single week. We now know that Debbie was just a smaller piece of the puzzle, and that there is a lot more to Raina then there seemed.
Now here comes the bad news. There is no new episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. next week. The show will be picking back up in two weeks. However, we do still have a preview to hold you over until then.
