Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz slammed a 2-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning tonight to put the Sox up 7-0.

Check out Big Papi laying the hammer down on St. Louis Cardinals reliever Kevin Siegrist:

For Ortiz, this was his 16th career homer in postseason play and fourth of this postseason.  Big Papi has matched his second highest RBI total for a postseason with 10, which he also accomplished in 2007.

The most home runs Ortiz has hit in a postseason is 5, so he is getting close to that 2004 total.  That year he also slugged in 19 RBI.

For the left hander Siegrist, the home run by Ortiz was the first he has given up to a left handed batter all season.

Siegrist pitched 39.2 innings this season and had a very impressive 0.45 ERA.  He struck out 50 batters in that time and walked just 18.

Boston leads Game 1 in the top of the 8th inning behind big hits and a stellar performance from starter Jon Lester.

Mike Napoli hit a bases clearing double in the first inning to put the Red sox up 3-0 and they haven’t looked back.

Lester went 7.1 innings, gave up 5 hits, no runs, struck out 8 and walked one on 110 pitches.
