World Series 2013: St. Louis Cardinals' Carlos Beltran taken to hospital in pain

Earlier this evening, St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran made a fantastic catch, robbing David Ortiz of a grand slam home run. Unfortunately for Beltran and the Cardinals, the oft-injured Beltran apparently hurt hit rib area and has now been transported to a local Boston hospital for further diagnosis.

Bob Lobel, who saw Beltran leaving Fenway Park reported that he looked to be in pain:

Beltran taken to mass general. in pain

The short right field wall has become problematic for outfielders as many, especially the taller players, seemingly make impact with their rib cage, something Beltran appeared to do.

As Beltran was running back to the wall, his body made impact before he actually made the catch and in the slow-motion replays, you can see Beltran’s ribs being hit by the wall. And although it is padded, listening to the crash on television, you wouldn’t have known that as the impact was quite strong.

The Cardinals say Beltran left the game with a rib contusion, though, that was diagnosed prior to his trip to the hospital.

For those that missed the catch, you can watch it here.
