Lyerla left the Oregon program last week and announced that he planned to hire an agent and enter the 2014 NFL Draft, according to multiple reports.
The embattled tight end had numerous run-ins with his head coach and school officials after various team rules violations and sketchy behavioral problems.
Back in August, Lyerla suggested that the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy was a government conspiracy, and subsequently apologized.
“Overall, I feel that I made a mistake in getting involved in such a personal matter on such a public platform,” Lyerla said according to a report from Adam Jude at The Oregonian. “And I’m apologetic to my teammates and my coaches and the program overall for doing that. But on the same note, I would never want to discourage anyone from having their own opinion or raising questions like that.
“But for me it was a bad idea because of the position I’m in, so like I said I’m apologetic and I’m looking forward to learning from this and moving on with the season.”
This latest incident certainly won’t help his draft stock, but more importantly one has to hope he can figure his life out and get back on track.
