World Series 2013: St. Louis Cardinals may start Adam Wainwright on short rest

If the St. Louis Cardinals are facing elimination come Game 4 (or at least are in a desperate situation), it’s possible they may start Adam Wainwright, this according to Cardinals.com:

The Cardinals are remaining flexible with their Game 4 plans and have not ruled out the possibility of bringing Game 1 starter Adam Wainwright back on three days of rest. Manager Mike Matheny chose to have Wainwright go five innings in Wednesday’s game even though the right-hander was knocked around for five runs before recording his sixth out. Still, Matheny indicated that Wainwright’s final pitch count of 95 would not preclude him from coming back earlier than initially expected.

I highly doubt the Cardinals would use Wainwright if down 2-1 in the series, so it seems as if they only scenario would be if they went down 3-0 but what I envision the Cardinals doing and what skipper Mike Matheny wants to do are two completely different things.

For what it’s worth, Wainwright, who would be starting on Sunday (in this said scenario).

Wainwright is currently the scheduled starter for Game 5.
