Arizona Diamondbacks decline future options on Kirk Gibson

The Arizona Diamondbacks had a pretty successful year this past season, though some late slippage combined with the Los Angeles Dodgers’ historic run did them in.

Still – there wasn’t much to hang your head about in Arizona if you were a Diamondbacks fan. Even with the solid play, it wasn’t enough to secure manager Kirk Gibson‘s future in the Valley of the Sun as it’s being reported that the Diamondbacks have declined the their team options for 2015 and 2016.

But Gibson said the organization’s decision to decline his options for 2015 and 2016, meaning next season will be his final guaranteed year under contract, will have no effect on the way he does his job.

The Diamondbacks have already fired their pitching coach Charles Nagy and first base coach Steve Sax, so it’s clear they’ve been less than impressed with the results coming out of the dugout.

Gibson still is under contract for 2014, though he’ll be entering with a lame duck status – not exactly the most enviable position for a manger.
