Li Na continued her impressive string of performances at the WTA Championships on Friday, dispatching Victoria Azarenka to the tune of 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the semi-finals. Li’s next opponent will be Petra Kvitova.
Azarenka, who has been dealing with a back injury, was not at full strength for the match. Li said afterwards that the knowledge of Azarenka’s injury was a distraction:
Today the match was not about tennis, it was about fitness. It was a mental challenge because I thought maybe after the first set she would give up or retire but she still tried to continue.
I could have lost the match because I could not focus on the court. I have to enjoy this moment but I hope the injury isn’t too bad and she can come back soon (Reuters).
If Li is able to advance to the finals, it is likely that she’ll play Serena Williams. The two met earlier this year at the U.S. Open, with Williams winning.
