World Series 2013: Cardinals will start Lance Lynn, not Wainwright in Game 4

Prior to the St. Louis Cardinals’ Game 2 win in the 2013 World Series, there was talk the Cardinals may opt to use 19-game winner Adam Wainwright on short rest to start Game 4.

But after the win, the Cardinals, who wouldn’t deny the idea, have said Lance Lynn will get the Game 4 start, not Wainwright:

While prepared to turn to Adam Wainwright on short rest had the Cardinals been down 3-0 in the World Series, manager Mike Matheny said on Friday that he plans to start Lance Lynn in Game 4 on Sunday night (7 p.m. CT on FOX, 7:15 first pitch).

St. Louis’ Game 2 victory guaranteed that Game 4 won’t be an elimination game for either squad, so there’s really no reason for the Cardinals to turn to Wainwright on limited rest.

Wainwright will follow Lynn in Game 5.

As for Lynn, who had been available out of the bullpen for the first two games of the World Series (though wasn’t needed), he’ll be making his third start of the postseason.

The start will be Lynn’s first in the Fall Classic, though, he pitched in five of the Cardinals’ 2011 World Series games as a reliever.
