Sunday’s WTA Championships final will feature Li Na taking on the top-ranked Serena Williams. Li beat Petra Kvitova 6-4, 6-2 on Saturday in the semi-finals, and Williams topped Jelena Jankovic to the tune of 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in her match. Li and Williams met earlier this year at the U.S. Open, with Williams winning.
Williams told reporters that she’s excited to take on Li:
It’s awesome, because we’re both in our 30s and, you know, I think we’re both playing the best tennis of our career. We’re still getting better.
I personally think I can do better. I’m sure she believes she can as well and it’s really good to have a peer right next to you your same age doing just as good, so it feels good (Reuters).
As for Li, she said that she wasn’t prepared mentally for taking on Williams at Flushing Meadows:
At the U.S. Open (semi-final) I had already lost the match before I came to the court. Maybe now I have to try to focus on what I should do on the court, not focus on what she does, so I have to try to play my game and not follow her.
We’ll bring you the results of the match tomorrow, so stay tuned.
