The Carolina Hurricanes signed Anton Khudobin to be a safety net. Just in case something happened to workhorse Cam Ward, he’d be there. They couldn’t have possibly seen this coming though. Both members of Carolina’s goaltending tandem are hurt right now, and both might not be able to return until just about the same time.
The hope was that Khudobin would be healed soon and would just need a few days to shake off the rink rust.
Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller said that Anton Khudobin still needs to practice to ”get up to speed.” Muller is not sure if he can be ready by

Unfortunately, the backup may be a bit farther away than the ‘Canes hoped. Muller spoke to the team’s official website after Khudobin attempted to skate this morning:
He’s got a little work to do. It’s nice to see that he went out and tried it. He’s got some work ahead of him, I guess. I don’t really have a time frame for him, to be honest with you.
In light of that development, the Hurricanes will be forced to go with Justin Peters for the time being.

As a precautionary measure that smells more of desperation than anything, the Hurricanes have also given a PTO to Rick DiPietro. The next week should be remarkably interesting to watch in a “I sure hope that fire doesn’t spread” sort of way.
