Portland Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts announced earlier this week that, after a strong preseason in which he was markedly improved on defense, Joel Freeland would be supplanting Meyers Leonard on the depth chart. Leonard, who showed flashes of promise on the offensive end as a rookie last year but was abysmal on defense, spoke the Ben Golliver of Blazer’s Edge about the demotion.

Said Leonard:

I was caught a little bit off guard. But, hey, this is a business. It’s coach’s job to put in the game who he thinks is going to give him the best chance to win. Like I’ve said a few times now, it’s time for me to get back after it even more.

It’s just lit a fire under me in a good way. I wish I was in the same position I was a couple of weeks ago. But, hey, maybe this is a realization.

The Blazers will begin the 2013-14 NBA season by taking on the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday.
