Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri has been battling a groin injury ever since the end of August, but he showed no ill-effects of the injury in Portland’s 5-0 win against Chivas on Saturday. In only one half of play, Valeri scored two goals and nabbed an assist on another .
Portland coach Caleb Porter said after the game that the team’s plan of limiting Valeri’s minutes down the stretch of the regular season has worked well:
It worked out perfect, because we wanted to start him and get him in a rhythm and in sync with our team. He showed what he can do and I think he left the game feeling good, feeling confident, feeling happy and in sync with our guys. We didn’t get him re-injured, so it’s perfect. Everything went just as planned (Oregon Live).
Despite the injury, Valeri has put together an exceptional season for the Timbers, scoring 10 goals and dishing out 13 assists.
The Timbers, riding an eight-game winning streak, are the top seed in the Western Conference.
