It Took a ‘Bad Grandpa’ to Bring ‘Gravity’ Back to Earth

Who would have thought that it would take a Bad Grandpa to bring Gravity back down to earth?

Well, that is exactly what happened this weekend when Johnny Knoxville’s newest raunchy comedy Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa debuted in theaters on Thursday night, bringing in $32 million over weekend.

The latest in the Jackass franchise was made on a $15 million dollar budget; something that they easily regained in their opening weekend.

Bad Grandpa follows the adventures of 86-year-old Irving Zinsman as he and his 8-year-old Grandson Billy travel across the U.S. in order to reunite Billy with his dead beat father while his mother is being sent to jail due to a probation violation. Irving and Billy will have to contend with everything from, dead bodies to beauty pageants, and even an angry biker gang along their way.

Bad Grandpa comes in just under $12 million more than Alfonso Cuarón’s interstellar space epic Gravity who came in at $20.3 million in its fourth week of release. The Oscar contender has brought in just over $200 million so far.

Just behind Gravity is Captain Phillips, the story of the real-life Captain Richard Phillips who was commanding the MV Maersk Alabama when it was hijacked by Somali Pirates. Captain Phillips drew $11.8 million this weekend, bringing its 3-week total to $70.1 million.

Also debuting this week is the new Ridley Scott film The Counselor starring Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem, and Cameron Diaz. Despite the star powered cast, the film debuted at just around $8 million.
