At just 22-years-of-age, St. Louis Cardinals rookie Kolten Wong has made a few mental mistakes this season. However, none were bigger than his mental gaffe in Game 4 of the 2013 World Series.
With the Cardinals trailing by two runs in the bottom of the ninth, Wong reached base which allowed postseason hero Carlos Beltran the opportunity to come to the plate.
Beltran, who’s postseason resume reads like a novel wouldn’t get an opportunity to swing the bat though as Wong, dancing off first base in an attempt to distract Red Sox closer, Koji Uehara, was picked off.
There was no place for Wong to go – he wasn’t going to steal second base and he had no reason to try and stay out of the double play considering there were two outs in the inning, so it was a complete mental mistake from the young infielder.
Wong, after getting picked off, could be seen slamming his helmet in disgust while Beltran stood in the batters box, completely in shock of what just took place.
Just another typical ending between the Red Sox and Cardinals, eh?
