R.A. Dickey of the Toronto Blue Jays has been announced the recipient of a 2013 Golden Glove. The award is given to a player of each position in both conferences. According to SB Nation’s blog Bluebird Banter,
Although his pitching line that included an ERA of 4.21 and a FIP of 4.58 wasn’t too pretty to look at, his defense (which included 7 defensive runs saved) made up for some of it.
Today also happens to be Dickey’s birthday. I’d say this is a pretty awesome birthday gift, considering it’s also his first Golden Glove award of his career.
This is the 23rd Gold Glove in Blue Jays history, with the most recent one going to Vernon Wells in 2006. Surprisingly enough, this is the first ever Gold Glove awarded to a Blue Jays pitcher so this season wasn’t a complete failure!
The Blue Jays knew they were getting someone pretty good when they acquired Dickey last year from the New York Mets, and he sure did prove it by winning this award.
