Penn State head coach Bill O'Brien sticks up for defensive coordinator John Butler

The Penn State Nittany Lions took a trip this past Saturday to Columbus, OH to take on the fourth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes to see if they could maybe replicate the magic they had against Michigan a few weeks prior, and upset yet another ranked Big Ten team.

Well, needless to say, that didn’t quite work out so well as the Lions were blown out, 63-14. Braxton Miller and the Ohio State offense did what they wanted, when they wanted, or so it certainly seemed.

Of course, when you give up that many points, the defensive coordinator is going to take a lot of the criticisms, and that’s exactly was Penn State defensive coordinator John Butler has had to endure since Saturday night.

Head coach Bill O’Brien, though, doesn’t think that should be the case.

O’Brien stuck up for his coordinator on Tuesday:

As is usual from a head football coach, O’Brien went to cast the blame upon himself:

This isn’t the first time this season that Butler has come under fire for a poor defensive effort. He was also heavily criticized following the loss to a good Central Florida team earlier this year, as well as when the Lions were manhandled by Indiana.
