Tulane safety Sam Scofield named Nagurski Defensive Player of the Week

2013 has been a breath of fresh air for the Tulane Green Wave and second-year head coach Curtis Johnson. They’re undefeated this season in Conference USA play and, in even bigger news, were able to secure themselves bowl eligibility on Saturday with their 14-7 victory over Tulsa. It’s the first time they’ve been able to secure that since the 2002 season.

A big part of that victory this past weekend was the phenomenal play of junior safety Sam Scofield. And for that, he’s been awarded the honor of being the Nagurski Defensive Player of the Week for Week 9.

Scofield was all over Tulsa on Saturday, recording a conference-high 18 tackles in the game, 14 of which were unassisted. He also added 1.5 tackles for loss, two pass break-ups and forced a fumble, which given the final score turned out to be huge in this one.

It was one of the more impressive individual defensive performances this season and an honor such as this is indeed deserved. Now, Scofield and his team can get ready to go bowling.
