The St. Louis Blues will play in back-to-back games this weekend against the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning, and the team has already revealed its goaltending rotation for those contests. Brian Elliott will get the call on Friday against the Panthers, while No. 1 goalie Jaroslav Halak will go against the Lightning on Saturday.
It isn’t too surprising that St. Louis will go to its workhorse for the game against the stronger Lightning team. Florida has been struggling badly this season, and it’s a good opportunity for the Blues to give Halak a rest. He’s started all but one game for St. Louis this season, and he’s among the league leaders in wins.
Elliott hasn’t started since dropping a 4-3 shootout decision to the Winnipeg Jets on October 18.
There have been some rumblings about the Blues investigating options to move their backup, making room for Jake Allen as the No. 2 guy. If that’s the case then they’ll have to give Elliott some chances to show that he’s still a capable netminder.
It wasn’t too long ago that the Blues decided to roll with Elliott in the playoffs. Just last season in fact, it was Halak sitting on the bench as St. Louis rolled with the hotter hand. Things have changed thought, and Halak’s strong play and Allen’s rising start have made Elliott an expendable commodity for the Blues.
He’ll get the chance to entice interested teams on Friday night against one of the weaker offenses in the NHL.
