The Boston Red Sox have a small, five day window where they have exclusive negotiating rights with outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury. They may want to use it to their full advantage as Ellsbury’s agent, Scott Boras says he has received eleven calls from GM’s around the league expressing interest in the free agent to be:
Scott Boras told me he’s already received 11 phone calls on Jacoby Ellsbury from GM’s around baseball/
Of course, expressing interest and actually having the money to make a serious play is a completely different subject.
Ellsbury has reportedly been asking for a contract upwards of $130 million – a figure he asked for in 2011 from the Red Sox, which he obviously didn’t get. But with market inflation over the course of two years, it wouldn’t exactly be all that shocking considering the San Francisco Giants just signed Hunter Pence to a five year, $90 million dollar team which was considered somewhat team friendly.
Either way, consider Ellsbury one of, if not the top free agent outfielder on the market.
