Mark Webber beat out Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel for the pole position at this weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Webber, who is retiring at the end of this racing season, has captured a pole position 13 times in his career.
Vettel, however, was not overly disappointed with the outcome. The 26-year-old recently claimed his fourth consecutive Formula One world title, making all the races from here on out simply window dressing.
Vettel spoke about Webber’s performance afterwards:
Mark did a very good lap so congratulations to him I should have done a little bit better, but I don’t know if it would have been enough. He did a great job, no mistakes (Reuters).
Fernando Alonso, who is sponsored by Ferrari and is one of Vettel’s/Red Bull’s biggest rivals, didn’t fare as well in the qualifying runs as Webber and Vettel did. Alonso, who is second behind Vettel in the points standings, will start the race in 11th place after a poor performance. He had previously started in the top 10 in every race this season.
