Michigan State defensive tackle Tyler Hoover ruled out with calf injury

When the Michigan State takes on the Michigan Wolverines this afternoon — 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC — the Spartans will be without star defensive tackle Tyler Hoover. The 6-foot-7, 290-pound senior will be held out of the game due to the same calf injury that kept him out of Michigan Sate’s 42-3 stomping of the Illinois Fighting Illini last weekend.

The loss of Hoover could prove to be a huge one for the Spartans. Michigan State leads the country in fewest yards allowed (only 215.5 per game), and they also sport a scoring defense that gives up fewer points per game (12.3) than anyone in the nation besides Alabama and Louisville. The lack of Hoover could open things up for a Michigan offense, led by Devin Gardner, that is averaging 446.4 yards and 42.4 points per game.
