There is some sad news to report in the college football world. Missouri Southern State University assistant football coach Derek Moore was shot and killed on Friday outside of a movie theater in Joplin, Missouri. A 39-year-old suspect has been arrested and is in custody, according to Sporting News.
It was homecoming weekend for Missouri Southern State University, and the remainder of the the homecoming events have been canceled for the weekend.
The university released a statement on the tragedy:
“We are stunned and deeply saddened by this tragic incident, and our prayers are with Derek’s family,” MSSU Interim President Alan Marble said in a statement. “We are ensuring that our employees and students have the emotional support they need during this difficult time.”
Head football coach Daryl Daye also released a statement.
“Derek was new to Missouri Southern but he was embraced by our campus and community. He was a very likeable person who always had a smile on his face and made friends easily with our staff and players. This is an unspeakable loss for the MSSU athletics family.”
