The Penn State Nittany Lions desperately needed a win this week against the Illinois Fighting Illini to gain some of their confidence back after being hammered, 63-14, last weekend on the road against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
They were able to get that win earlier today inside Beaver Stadium, 24-17, in overtime. It was Penn State’s second overtime victory this season, with a win over the Michigan Wolverines in extra periods already under their belt.
Down by three, Penn State’s Sam Ficken was able to knock through a 35-yard field goal to tie the score up at 17.
In the first overtime period, Penn State handled the ball first from the Illinois 25 and they struck right away on a touchdown pass to tight end Kyle Carter, a play that would turn out to be all the Nittany Lions would need to lock this one up.

Illinois had their chance with the ball right after, but Illini QB Nathan Scheelhaase was intercepted by Penn State’s Ryan Keiser to definitively put this one to bed.
The loss extended Illinois’ losing streak in the Big Ten to 18 games.
