You read that head line right. Stoke City goalie Asmir Begović scored in the first minute of the game to give his team a one-goal lead early. First of all, it is incredibly rare to see a goalie score at all, let alone this early in the game.

Begović didn’t necessarily do anything incredible to score, so much as the opposing goalie making a mistake. Stoke City passed back to Begović who booted it down field. Southampton keeper Artur Boruc came out to greet it but ultimately misjudged it. The ball bounced off the turf and over Artur Boruc who couldn’t recovered and it just rolled into the back of the net.

Southampton came into the game in fifth place in the English Premier League table and had allowed only three goals all season. Only three goals in nine games. Thanks to Begović it is now four goals in 10 games.

Southampton could risk falling in the table if they don’t turn it around against Stoke City, who sit in the bottom half of the table.

And cause video isn’t enough, here is a GIF:

As a longtime Goalkeeper these moments make me both smile and cringe.

The Southampton keeper was Boruc, not Sorensen (Sorensen is the second choice gk for Stoke)
