When Jim Leyland stepped down as manager of the Detroit Tigers, potential skippers in waiting foamed at the mouth to secure the job. While a handful of openings remained on the market, none came with the perks of a team coming off three consecutive American League Championship Series’.
That’s what will be awaiting Brad Ausmus, who is expected to be named the Detroit Tigers manager in the extremely near future.
#Tigers to hire Ausmus as manager. First reported @AdamSpolane.
Ausmus, a former Major League catcher who spent portions of three seasons in Motown has never been a skipper at the Major League level, however, he’s viewed as one of the premier baseball minds in the league and has been working as a special assistant to the San Diego Padres‘ general manager. Ausmus did manage Team Israel in the most recent World Baseball Classic however, so it’s not as if he’s never been in the dugout at a high level.
The Tigers are expected to announce the hiring soon.
