The injury news just keeps getting worse and worse for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, who improved to 7-2 on the year by beating Navy 38-34 on Saturday. Defensive lineman Kona Schwenke suffered a high-ankle sprain in the game, and Sheldon Day also aggravated an ankle injury from earlier in the season. Too add to the bad news, it’s been reported that linebacker Ben Councell will be out for the rest of the year.
Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly spoke about the team’s injury problems on Sunday:
We’re at that point where from a defensive standpoint and particularly on the defensive line, we’re left with very few options. It becomes an issue now where we have to be very creative with what we’re doing and how we’re doing it.
We have some more work to do in terms of looking at personnel. Well figure something out. We’ll get 11 guys out there. It’s just not going to be one of those things where we have the same group of guys out there all the time (Red Eye Chicago).
We wish the best of look to Councell and the other injured Irish players as they recover.
