Portland Timbers beat Seattle Sounders 2-1 to win first MLS playoff game

The Portland Timbers won their first-ever MLS playoff game on Saturday night, defeating the rival Seattle Sounders 2-1 in front of a big crowd at CenturyLink Field.

The Timbers outshot the Sounders 20-10, getting a first-half goal fifteen minutes into the game from Ryan Johnson and later a second-half goal from midfielder Darlington Nagbe.

Now needing only a draw in the second leg of the playoff series, Portland coach Caleb Porter spoke about the win afterwards:

That puts us in the driver’s seat coming back home. Now we’re at home and we’re in a great position. If we win the game at home, then we’re through (Oregon Live).

Midfield Will Johnson also chimed in:

(The win) gives us a great deal of confidence and now we go home in front of our fans, our supporters and get a good chance to try and finish the job. I think we put ourselves in a really good spot and that excites everybody.

Dating back to the regular season, the Timbers have now won nine games in a row.
