As the USC Trojans begin to ramp up their efforts to find their new head football coach, a former NFL head coach is on the radar. Initially reports were denied that the Trojans had reached out to former Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith, but CBS Sports reports that sources close to situation have told them that is the case.
It was just a year ago that Smith was let go by the Chicago Bears after an underwhelming season and he received plenty of interest from teams around the league in their head coaching openings.
This offseason, more jobs will open up and Smith will be a hot name yet again, but he could be intrigued by the USC job.
Smith has plenty of experience as an assistant in the college ranks — he coached at his alma mater Tulsa, Wisconsin, Arizona State, Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio State — and his NFL experience would make him a great candidate for the USC opening.
Whether or not he feels ready to leave the NFL behind to join the college ranks remains to be seen, but it is a real possibility.
