‘Ender’s Game’ Takes the Box Office This Weekend with $28 million

It would seem that moviegoers love a good space adventure this year. This weekend, Ender’s Game, directed by Gavin Hood took hold of the top spot at the box office this weekend with a solid $28 million opening.

The film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by author Orson Scott Card.

A lot of people seem to consider Ender’s Game to be the new YA property on the rise; however, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Card originally wrote the series for adults. This would stand to reason since 58% of the people who ventured out to see the film were over the age of 25.

In order for this movie to make back its $110 million budget, it is going to have to hold strong for a few more weeks. However, that task is a lot harder than it sounds. Next week, Marvel’s newest edition to its Cinematic Universe comes into play when Thor: The Dark World is released in theaters.

In the second spot this week, Johnny Knoxville’s comedy about the 86-year-old Irving Zisman and his Grandson Billy, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, held its own at the Box Office, bringing in $20.5 million in its second week of release.

The film, which only cost about $15 million to make, has more than quadrupled its budget with a $62.1 million haul in the two weeks it has been in theaters.

It would seem that it is a good week for the new releases, as the sexagenarian comedy Last Vegas takes the number three spot at the Box Office this weekend with $16.5 million.

Last Vegas, starring Robert DeNiro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Kline, is the story of three sixty-something friends who get together to throw a legendary bachelor party in Las Vegas for their last remaining single friend.

Not far behind that was the animated comedy Free Birds with $16.2 million.

Free Birds stars the voice talents of Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, George Takei, Colm Meaney, and more. It is about two turkeys from opposite sides of the tracks that must put aside their differences for the sake of the greater good; to travel back in time and change the course of history to get Turkey off of the holiday menu for good.

Both Gravity and Captain Phillips are both holding strong in the Top 10 with $13.1 and $8.5 million respectively this weekend.
