Jon Jones is the cover athlete for EA Sports UFC

Jon Jones, the UFC’s Light Heavyweight champion and arguably top pound-for-pound fighter on the planet, will grace the cover of the first ever EA sports UFC game. This will be the first time Jones lands on the cover of the UFC video game.

The previous games, under the THQ banner, had Forrest Griffin, Brock Lesnar, and Anderson Silva on the covers respectively.

Jon Jones was likely an easy choice for EA. The youngest, and already the most prolific Light Heavyweight champion in UFC history, has been absolutely incredible throughout his career. Jones has blossomed from a rare talent, into an incredible champion.

Jones’s last fight, a war with challenger Alexander Gustafsson, was arguably the greatest title fight the UFC has ever seen. Jones had never been tested the way Alex tested him that night. Like a true champion, however, Jones rallied and won the decision to retain the belt. His next matchup will be against heavy hitter, Glover Teixeira, sometime in the beginning of 2014.

But wait there’s more! Jon Jones will not be the only fighter to be gracing the cover of the video game. EA has decided to have a fan vote to decide the other cover athlete! The voting will begin today at UFC.com/covervote and run until December 1st.

The 16 candidates are Demetrious Johnson, Dominick Cruz, Urijah Faber, Jose Aldo, Benson Henderson, Georges St-Pierre, Johny Hendricks, Chris Weidman, Junior dos Santos, Chael Sonnen, Michael Bisping, Daniel Cormier, Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate and Alexander Gustafsson.

The vote will be a weekly elimination tournament until the next cover athlete is the lone victor. Fans can vote as often as possible and double their voting power by using fighter-specific hashtags on “Twitter Vote Thursdays.” Each tweet with the proper hashtag will count as two votes.

As for me, I am hoping for a Gustafsson/Jones cover. What would be more epic than the two men who put on the greatest title fight in UFC history, to grace the game’s cover before they rematch?

Who do you want on the cover? Is there a fighter not listed among the candidates you would have voted for? Sound off in the comments below.
